Ghosts
Ghostly figures cross the Millennium Bridge heading back towards St Paul’s Cathedral. The cathedral is one of the most famous and most recognisable sights of London, with its dome, framed by the spires of Wren’s City churches, dominating the skyline for 300 years– and indeed one of the most well known places of Christian Worship across the world. Completed in 1710, it was designed by Sir Christopher Wren – the UK’s most acclaimed and respected architects – who was given the responsibility of rebuilding 52 London Churches after the Great Fire of London in 1666. The Cathedral is 518ft (158m) long, and 365ft (111m) high, a height which, made the cathedral, until 1962, the tallest building in London. In modern times it is a busy working church, with hourly prayer and daily services, and has conducted several high profile events during it’s time, including the funeral of Winston Churchill, and the marriage between The Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer.
The Millennium Bridge is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames which links the Southbank to the City. Completed in July 2000, the bridge initially had the nickname “Wobbly Bridge”, due the bridge swaying, it was then closed for two years in order to completely resolve this unwanted movement. The bridge is near many of London’s premier tourist attractions, including St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tate Modern Art Gallery and the Globe Theatre, all within 5 minutes walk. The bridge famously appeared in the Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, where it was destroyed by Death Eaters. Since it’s completion it has become a popular landmark, with locals and tourists alike.
